Tenerife has far more to offer than just golden beaches and all-inclusive hotels – though those are a great foundation for any holiday. Beyond the coastline, you’ll find towering volcanoes, lush forests and charming villages where you can truly escape.
This Canary Island has something for everyone, no matter if you love nature, culture, sunshine or just new experiences. If you haven’t been yet, here’s why it deserves a spot at the top of your travel list.
Amazing natural landscapes
Unexpectedly for some, Tenerife’s landscapes take your breath away. The island is home to Spain’s highest peak, Mount Teide, which sits at the heart of an otherworldly national park. Hike up its trails or take the cable car to the summit for views that stretch across the island.
For a paradise of greenery, head north to Anaga Rural Park, where misty forests and dramatic ravines make it feel a world away from the sun-baked south. And if you’re up for an adventure, the Masca Valley’s winding trails lead to hidden beaches that feel like a reward at the end of the spectacular journey.
More culture and history than meets the eye
Culture isn’t something you immediately expect from the Canary Islands. But in the capital, Santa Cruz, you can wander through old, colonial streets and stop for delightful tapas in shady squares. Over in La Laguna, this UNESCO-listed town boasts pastel-coloured mansions and cobbled lanes that tell the story of Tenerife’s past.
But history isn’t just found in the cities. In the fishing village of Garachico, you’ll see the lasting resilience of locals who rebuilt their town after a volcanic eruption. Even the island’s festivals bring history to life. Visit during Carnival season and you’ll see the streets explode with colour, music and elaborate costumes.
Wonderful biodiversity
Tenerife won’t disappoint if you love wildlife. The waters around the island are home to resident pods of dolphins and pilot whales, making boat trips an unforgettable experience. Birdwatchers can enjoy the island’s varied landscapes that attract everything from Canarian blue chaffinches in the forests to ospreys soaring over the cliffs.
Even the plant life is unique. Few places in the world can you find Tenerife’s famous dragon trees, some of which are centuries old. The famous Millennial Dragon Tree is said to be over 800 years old – and well worth a visit.
World-class attractions
There’s plenty to do when you’re not exploring the great outdoors on a Tenerife holiday. Families flock to Siam Park, considered to be one of the best water parks in the world. Thai-themed slides, lazy rivers and artificial waves create the ultimate day out. If you prefer wildlife parks, Loro Parque is home to everything from gorillas to parrots, as well as stunning botanical gardens.
The island also has a buzzing nightlife scene. Head to Playa de las Américas for lively bars and clubs, or Los Cristianos if you prefer a relaxed evening with cocktails by the beach. And for a taste of something different, visit the vineyards of Tacoronte and sample some surprisingly good local wines.
Sunshine all year round
One of the biggest draws to this part of the world is the climate. Tenerife is perfect for a holiday whenever you need one. Even in the middle of winter, temperatures hover around 20°C, making it a great escape from the cold.
Summer days are reliably sunny, but thanks to the island’s Atlantic breeze, it never feels too hot. In the north, the climate is milder and the landscapes are lusher. Whether you want to sunbathe in December, hike in March or swim in October, Tenerife always delivers.
