With so much attention on feminist movements and celebrating young women for the intelligent, strong and successful people they are, it seems crazy that as some of the most glorious couture fashion you’ve ever seen is popping up on our feeds, it’s being accompanied by worthless news stories and judgemental critiques of the women wearing it.
I’m talking specifically of two cases involving two of the media’s favourite models, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid.
Jenner walked the carpet in a barely there, La Perla ‘naked dress’ that showed off every inch of her jaw dropping body and not long after, tweets and Instagram comments began slut-shaming Jenner for her revealing look. People were reprimanding her for showing off her body for ‘shock factor’ instead of letting her natural beauty shine in a more conservative look and many labelled her as tacky, slutty and classless.
Not long after Jenner walked the carpet, Bella Hadid arrived with her equally jaw dropping body covered in a skin tight, backless, semi-sheer Alexander Wang cat suit. And just like we saw after the Victoria’s Secret show, Hadid’s attendance was reduced to the value of her ex-flame ‘The Weeknd’. The internet was once again a buzz with comments and stories of Hadid’s ‘revenge body’ as if her sole purpose for getting ready for and attending the event, was to parade herself around in front of her ex and show him what he’s missing. Yea, no.
No matter what your opinion on their fashion choices, it’s not cool to reduce the femininity, beauty and confidence of these young women down to snarky comments and pre-modern world views on how women should exist in a man’s world.
Let’s be honest, if I had a body like either of these women, my ex and your outrageous opinions on what it means to be a slut would be the last thing on my mind.
Get a grip people.
